Lady Bearcats sweep to tournament crown
The Union Hill Lady Bearcats’ 8th grade girls basketball team swept through three straight foes over the weekend to bag top honors in its own Union Hill Invitational Tournament played in Grass Valley.
Union Hill, which is undefeated in Nevada County Athletic League action, defeated the Lady Spirit of Sacramento, 43-21, in its opening tourney game on Friday.
Katie Johnson sank 10 points and Lauren Mickel and Bailey Walker added nine points apiece to spark the opening win. Erin Selleck chipped in with eight more.
In the semi-finals, Union Hill belted fellow NCAL foe Forest Lake, 52-14. Janette Williams had the hot hand with 15 points for the winners while Emma Peterson contributed 10 more markers. Selleck and Mickel added more punch with nine and eight points respectively.
The championship game saw Union Hill continue its fine play with a 57-14 verdict over Newcastle as Johnson and Mickel each bucket 16 points and Walker finished with 10.
