Seven Hills takes down Bearcats, 48-42

 

The Nevada County Athletic League’s boys basketball season entered its third week of play and Tuesday’s games had plenty of action and excitement.

In NCAL play from Tuesday, both the 8th and 7th grade levels had games where a pair of teams were knocked from the unbeaten ranks. Here’s a look at Tuesday’s action:

 

8th Grade

Seven Hills 48 Union Hill 42 – Seven Hills’ Raiders played an aggressive game and halted Union Hill’s Bearcats in a game played in the Union Hill gym. The Raiders took advantage of the hosts by beating them

up and down the court and by pounding the boards. Union Hill made a late rally and came within two with a couple minutes to go but couldn't catch the Raiders. Sean Anderson had a big game for the winners (2-2) with 18 points and a load of rebounds. Also having a hand in the win for the Nevada City cagers were Garrett O’Callaghan, Dillon   and Lucas Vojak, all with 10 points each. For the Bearcats, Jake Berger had 16 points while Mike Tapia chipped in 13. Beau DesPois led ‘Cats rebounders by pulling down 7 caroms. Union Hill now stands at 3-1 in league play and faces Magnolia on Thursday.

Weimar Hills 40 Pleasant Valley 29, at Lake Wildwood – The undefeated (4-0) Warriors pulled away from a slim 19-15 halftime lead by using a strong 2nd half defensive showing to stymie the host Vikings.  Michael Wilson and Jordan Balser each sank 11 points to spark the winners. Jack Baldoni and Cole Joyce chipped in with six and five points respectively.  For PV (2-2), Nolan Stefani tallied eight points while John Jones and Brandon Fouse both netted six points each. 

 

Small Schools

 

Mt. St. Mary's 38 Clear Creek 25 - After an 0-2 start, the St. Mary’s Eagles put forth their best defensive effort to nail down their first win. After the first period the Eagles led 11-3 sparked by point guard Sam Reese's defensive pressure while collecting 9 points off 5 steals. Reese finished with 14 points for the game while Nicole Blaney and Alexis Carrillo had 11 and 8 respectively.  Earl English and Sophia "George" Rubino did a nice job on the boards. In earlier action, Ready Springs notched a 43-36 win over the Eagles. Ready Springs trailed throughout the first half before a full court man press turned the tide in the fourth quarter. Mt St. Mary's then scrambled back to pull within three points with a minute left due to defensive play byAlexis Carrillo, Sam Reese and Justin Garcia as each collected a steal and a basket. However, the play of Raiders guard Dalton Maxwell was too much as he finished with 17 points, 15 coming in the second half. For the Eagles Reese had 14 points and Blaney added 10.

7th Grade

Forest Lake Christian 47 Gilmore 25, at Grass Valley – A tough team defensive effort by the visiting Falcons (2-2) proved to be the difference has the Bombers were handed their first loss of the season.  Leading 20-16 at halftime, the Falcons’ balanced offense and gluey defense took the game over. Both Logan Markstein and David O’Brien tallied 11 points apiece for the winners while Kyle Soria followed with 10. Gilmore (3-1) was led by Jess Sutton with 13 points and Jericho Mendez with 12.  

Seven Hills 33 Union Hill 29, at Grass Valley -  Fueled by Steven Skaggs’ eight first quarter points, the Raiders led 10-0 at the end of the opening stanza before Union Hill rallied with a strong second quarter to take a 12-10 lead at halftime. The contest was then tied at 20-all at the end of the 3rd before Seven Hills caught fire. Keyed by Trevor Humphreys, Trent Foster and Ben Beltran, the Raiders took an 8 point lead with about a minute and a half left and went on to win by 4. Skaggs led the winners with 10 points followed by Humphreys with 8 points, Foster with six and Beltran with four. Christian Straub topped all scorers with 14 for Union Hill. Weimar Hills 42 Pleasant Valley 7, at Lake Wildwood – Ten different players found the scoring column for the winners who improved to 4-0 in NCAL games. John Kirwan sparked the win with 12 points while Alex Tobiasz added six markers and Ryan Hallman finished with five.
