Table Set For NU, Placer Showdown Next Week

In the three years of foothillpreps.com listing its weekly area freshman and JV football football polls, there hasn’t been too many chances for teams to settle “Who’s No. 1” on the field.

That could change however next Thursday night when the two top teams in this season’s freshman poll collide in Auburn.

Both No. 1 ranked Nevada Union and host No. 2 Placer will take perfect 5-0 records into the non-league tilt set to kickoff at 5:30 p.m. It is believed to be the first time in nearly 20 years that former rivals NU and Placer have met on the gridiron in any level.

Both teams won handily on Thursday to set up next week’s showdown.

Here’s a recap of last night’s freshman games in the area:

Nevada Union 48 Antelope 0 – Leading ust 13-0 at halftime, the Miners broke things open with quarterback Kyle Cota finding Bobby Curtis for a 63-yard scoring play.

NU went on to score 35 unawnsered points with Ian Davis breaking a 24-yard touchdown run to help get the second half onslaught underway.

The rushing game was led by Tanner Vallejo who picked up 67 yards and scored a touchdown while Hank Humphers added 37 more rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Terry Graham added the final score of the night from five yards out.

Leading tacklers were Vallejo, Davis, Dickinson, Jamie Sanders, Gabe Saturnino and Cody Gardner. Mike Buonarati converted six of seven extra point attempts and put two kickoffs in the end zone.

Placer 50 El Dorado 8 - Michael Robinson rushed for 160 yards and tallied five touchdowns to help power Placer’s frosh football team to a lopsided 50-8 Pioneer Valley League win over El Dorado Thursday night in Placerville.

While Robinson keyed the Hillmen win, coach Jim Gray also praised the efforts of quarterback Casey Yunk, who was 6 of 9 passing for 190 yards; defender Eddie Vanderdoes, who had seven tackles, a sack, a pass interception and a fumble recovery; and linebacker Jerry Pellegrino who racked up a pair of sacks, five tackles and stood out on kick coverage.

Also having strong games were Jacob Mahlman who rushed for 48 yards with a touchdown and Isaac Brahce who had a 75-yard pass reception to set up a score and also rushed for a touchdown.

Whitney 28 Colfax 0 – Whitney quarterback Josh Robinson ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another as the Wildcats (5-0) topped the Falcons. Whitney scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns to lead 16-0 at halftime and then added one score in each the third and fourth quarters.

Colfax, which fell to 2-3 and 1-1 in Pioneer Valley League games, was led by the rushing of R.J. Hurley and Clay Southerland and the defensive work of Henry Freer, Chris Cand and Tim Stuck. Colfax plays at Mesa Verde next Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. Mesa Verde loss 26-0 to Lincoln Thursday.

Del Oro 34 Vintage 7 – The host Golden Eagles led from start to finish in topping the visiting Crushers from Napa. Del Oro, 4-1, opens Sierra Foothill League play by hosting Granite Bay next Thursday.

River Valley 19 Bear River 6 – The Bruins received a touchdown pass from Hayden Macklin to Kevin Kimball but couldn’t overcome the loss of several starters who were ill with the flu.  The Bruins fell to 1-3 on the season with the non-league loss to the Yuba City foe.
