SFLL 11s Play Tonight

After having its game with Penn Valley postponed Wednesday night because of poor air quality in the Penn Valley area, the Sierra Foothills LL 11-year old All-Stars will take on host Penn Valley today at 5:30 p.m. at Western gateway Park. The winner will then look to unseat Bear River who is in the driver's seat of the Area II tournament with a perfect record. SFLL 11s Blank Newcastle 10-0; Still Alive In Tourney

Shrugging off a tough second round loss last Saturday to Bear River, the Sierra Foothills Little League’s 11-year-old All-Star team persevered Tuesday night in District 11 All-Star tournament action.

Battling warm temperatures that hovered in the triple digit range at Penn Valley’s Western Gateway Park, the SFLL 11s cooled down Newcastle 10-0 in an elimination game involving the two Area II teams.

Receiving shutout pitching from starter Greg Painter and closer Ryan Hallman, the SFLL squad to stymie the Newcastle bats in a game that was shortened to five innings.

SFLL went the “team effort” route on offense as Mason Lewis’ two-run triple and a bases loaded two-bagger by Taylor Avila helped account for five of the Colfax’s team’s tallies.

Also supplying fuel to the SFLL offense were key hits from Justin Boice, Blake Rawlings and Frank Herrera.

Jake Buol also contributed some nifty glove work at second base to help aid in the win.

Sierra Foothills, now 2-1 in tournament play, meets host Penn Valley today at 5:30 p.m. in another elimination game.

The winner will then advance to Thursday’s first Area II championship game where it will have to defeat unbeaten Bear River to force an “if necessary” game on Friday.
