A big seven-run third inning helped ignite the Penn Valley White Sox to an impressive opening night win in District 11 Tournament of Champions action Wednesday at Bear River. Receiving key hits, solid pitching and taking advantage of their opponents fielding miscues, the White Sox turned back Grass Valley’s A’s, 13-1, to advance to Friday night’s second round. The White Sox, Penn Valley’s “B” team, will take on the Giants, the host Bear River Little League’s “A” team, in a game slated to start at 7:30 p.m. For all practical purposes, the White Sox scored all of the runs they would need to handle the Giants when the winners pushed over four scores in the first inning. Winning pitcher Beau DePois aided his own cause in the first inning uprising when he connected on a three-run double. However, the White Sox put the hammer down on the win in the third inning when they paraded 11 batters to the plate and scored seven times. Kyle Cota’s two-run triple and other key hits from Cory Cesak, Benito Lozada and Ryan Turner also were vital in the big frame. Cota finished the game with a pair of hits and drove in three runs while Jack Gemetti and John Swanton each scored a pair of runs. Roland Pussich also had a hand in the win as he scored three times, played fine defense at third base and also pitched one inning in relief. Grass Valley tallied its lone run in the fourth inning when Sam Fasbinder stroked a RBI double. Grass Valley Angels 13 Nevada City Indians 8 In the nightcap, the Grass Valley Angels outlasted the Nevada City Indians, 13-8. The Angels will advance to Saturday’s second round action where they will meet the winner of Thursday’s first round game between Foresthill’s “A” team and Nevada City’s “B” team. |
