NC Wildfire Takes 2nd in Elk Grove
Sydnee Chambers of the Nevada County Wildfire dives into third base in action from last weekend's Wilson Trophy Classic played in Elk Grove.
The Nevada County Wildfire girls fast pitch 13-and-under softball team is showing that it is a force to be reckoned with this fall as the squad put forth another strong tournament showing. Playing in the Wilson Trophy Classic in Elk Grove, the Wildfirecame home with a strong runner-up finish. The team has now played in four tournaments and have reached the championship game in each event. Led by the stellar pitching of Erin Nichol, the Wildfirebattled back from a 3-run deficit in the top of the 6th to tie up the title game on Sunday at 3-3. Starting the Wildfire rally was Hannah Mosman who keyed a big hit parade with a hard shot that was too hot to handle by the Rocklin Hype’s 2nd baseman to get the rally started. The hits then continued as Sydnee Chambers and Dana Dickinsen followed with safeties to load the bases. Next up was catcher Maddie Fournier. Fournier, a recent standout addition to the team, immediately followed with a RBI single to right to get the Nevada County crew on the board. Dani Szura then kept the rally going with another single that tallied a pair of runs that tied the game up. Also standing out in the tourney were Reilly Gandell who contributed solid pitching Sunday morning and Sierra Payne who finished the weekend with two doubles and four RBI’s. Although the Hype pulled out a 4-3 win, the inspirational efforts of the Wildfire in its comeback is drawing attention of their opponents. Also playing well in the tourney were Courtney Edwards who unloaded four doubles. She filled a void in the offense left when slugger Cassie Breazeale was injured sliding into third base after ripping a triple in the first game. The Wildfire next head to compete in the “Rippin Chicks in Reno” tourney on Oct. 6-7. Also the 11 and under Wildfire will also be vying in the upcoming “Fall Frenzy” in Sacramento Sept. 29-30. The Wildfire organization is looking for additional sponsors. Ifinterested please contact Rod Edwards at 265-6713 or 798-8230. Also, the teams would like to have a big shout out to Wildfire Construction for their contribution to the program. |
