Late basket pushes PV past Forest Lake

Things probably couldn’t get any closer than they did between Pleasant Valley and Forest Lake Christian in their Nevada County Athletic League boys 8th grade basketball game played Wednesday afternoon at FLC.

In a see-saw affair that saw the lead change hands several times throughout the four quarters, Pleasant Valley used an in-the-lane 8-foot jumper by John Jones has time expired as the difference in the Vikings’ pulling out a 46-44 win over the host Falcons.

“The ball was coming through the net as the buzzer sounded,” said Pleasant Valley coach Gene Smith. “It was a real big shot for John and us.”

Pleasant Valley (3-2) led Forest Lake (3-3) 9-7 after one quarter and 20-15 at halftime. However, the Falcons surged behind the shooting of J.B. Baker and Luke Jordan in the third quarter to outscore the Vikings, 13-6, and grab a 28-26 lead going into the final canto.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings and Falcons went back and forth with the two teams finally locked in a 44-all duel before Jones delivered his game winning hoop.

Jones finished with 19 markers to lead PV while Nolan Stefani, Brandon Fouse and Jakob Freele all checked in with nine points each in the balanced Vikings offense.

For Forest Lake, Baker finished with 19 points while Jordan netted 11 more.

In the 7th grade game, Forest Lake improved to 4-2 with a 45-5 win over Pleasant Valley.

Thursday’s NCAL action has Gilmore playing Weimar Hills at Sierra Hills School in Meadow Vista, Pleasant Valley trekking to Seven Hills and Union Hill visiting Magnolia. 7th grade games begin at 4 p.m. followed by the 8th grade contests at approximately 5:15.
