Del Oro Routs Vikes, 35-8; Wins SFL

It wasn’t easy but the Del Oro High JV football is perfect – again.

Overcoming a sputtering first half, the Golden Eagles rallied behind three touchdowns from Russell Smith and a sturdy defense to complete a perfect 10-0 season with a 35-8 drubbing of Oakmont last Friday night in Roseville.

For the Golden Eagle sophomores, who had to overcome the early season loss of standout two-way player Tanner Huber, it marked the class’ second straight 10-0 campaign and second consecutive Sierra Foothill League championship.

Del Oro got the scoring started in the first quarter when a pass interception by Nick O’Sullivan and an ensuing 27-yard run by O’Sullivan set up a 27-yard scoring blast from Smith.

Leading 6-0, Del Oro quarterback Bobby Heatherington keyed the next drive as he connected with passes of 12 yards to O’Sullivan and 13 to Alex Bertrando to set the table for a 32-yard scoring strike that O’Sullivan hauled in for the score.

The same Heartherington-O’Sullivan connection teamed up for the two-point conversion pass and the score was 14-0 Golden Eagles.

After Oakmont trimmed the Del Oro margin to 14-8 at halftime the Golden Eagles went to work Smith’s second touchdown, a 10-yard run pushed Del Oro’s lead to 21-8.

O’Sullivan theb broke off a big 53-yard gallop on Del Oro’s next possession to set up an eventual seven-yard run by Smith which made the score 28-8. Dominic Piazza then tallied Del Oro’s final touchdown on a run in the fourth canto.

Defensive standouts for the Golden Eagles included O’Sullivan, Blake Covey and Austin Soldano, all who has pass interceptions along with Bayard Seydel and Jake Craythorn.
