Bruins Trip Up Falcons In PVL JV Opener

Trevor McGee kick-started the Bear River JV football team by returning the opening kickoff 75 yards and the Bruins never looked back in handing Colfax a 27-8 setback in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both schools Monday at Bear River.

McGee’s excellent kick return gave the Bruins outstanding field position at the Colfax 12-yard line and the Bruins used it to score in just three plays on Jim Bamburg’s three-yard run. Jack Tortorci’s extra point boot made the score, 7-0 Bruins.

Bamburg went on to finish the game with 17 carries for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Bear River upped the count to 14-0 later in the first quarter as they put together a 13-play 67-yard march that Josh Toft capped on the final play of the first quarter with a six-yard run.

Colfax couldn’t sustain anything in the first half against a hard charging Bear River defense and went into the locker room trailing 14-0 at halftime.

Colfax took the second half kickoff and with Hunter Owens providing some nice runs pushed to the Bear River 29-yard line but the Falcons on a fourth down and eight situation could only produce five yards.

Bear River then capitalized and used a personal foul penalty on the Falcons and a 19-yard pass from Dallen Huetters to Brandon Wooner to set up an eventual 14-yard run by Bamburg which upped the count to 20-0 with 2:32 left in the third.

The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard on their next possession when Sean Rawlins caught a 59-yard scoring pass from Nolan Karbowski. Rawlins came back on the slightly under-thrown ball, made a nice catch and then out maneuvered two would-be Bruins tacklers to win the race to the end zone. Owens then ran over the two-point conversion making the score, 20-8.

Colfax’s defense, led by Brett Fowler, Zac Coffman, Sam Quinlan and David Mowbray, then stiffened and forced a Bruins punt that gave the Falcons a chance to trim into the lead, however, the Falcons only picked up one first down.

The Bruins then scored their final touchdown of the night on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Huetters with 3:16 to play in the game.

In other PVL JV action, Placer waxed Mesa Verde 59-14; Lincoln upended Whitney, 20-6 and El Dorado fell in a non-league game to Liberty Ranch of Galt, 41-12.
